Sri Lankan economy is losing around Rs. 20 billion by wasting vegetables and fruits

Sri Lankan economy is losing around Rs. 20 billion by wasting vegetables and fruits per year; Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) revealed.

This was revealed after an audit conducted by the National Audit Office in 2015. The report reveals about 270000 metric tons of vegetables and fruits are being wasted annually in the country. The above informations were mentioned at a COPA Committee meeting chaired by Prof. Tissa Vitharana which was held at the Parliament Complex (April 07).

The post-harvest damage in the vegetables and fruits in Sri Lanka is estimated between 30-40 precent according to the report. Also thr report says that 73% of adult population is not consuming the considerable adequate amount of vegetables and fruits.
